    Hugo Mühlig was first taught to paint by his father in Dresden before becoming a master pupil in the class of Victor Paul Mohn at the academy in Dresden. The artist's early work was orientated on the realism of Ludwig Richter's school.

    However, upon moving to Düsseldorf in 1881 he broke with all of his earlier influences and began to paint in a looser, freer style inspired by the Impressionists.
