He undertook extensive study trips to Paris, Spain, Northern Africa, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands. He achieved fame by his frescoes of historical topics, such as in the town halls of Berlin and Hamburg. During the First World War, he accompanied Paul von Hindenburg as his portrait painter.
