Ignacio León y Escosura was born in Oviedo, Spain, on December 19, 1834, and died in Toledo on January 28, 1901. He was a painter, antiquarian, and collector known for his historical and genre scenes, often rendered with refined detail and a strong sense of narrative.

León y Escosura began his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts in La Coruña, and later continued his studies at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where he studied under Federico de Madrazo.
