    Shepler was born in West Virginia in 1876. Moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1919. In San Antonio, he met the artist Peter Lanz Hohnstedt, who he is believed to have studied with. His impressionist landscapes are definitely influenced by Hohnstedt's works.

    Shepler's paintings are of very good quality and consistently so. He demonstrated a keen sense for color, balance and rhythm. His subjects were mostly Texas Hill Country landscapes. Occasional coastal scenes and Colorado landscapes. He designed and carved the frames for many of his paintings. Shepler maintained a studio at the Gibb's Building, downtown San Antonio in the 1930's.
