    Ismael Nery is a Brazilian painter, a pioneer of Brazilian modernism, influenced by expressionism, cubism and surrealism. In 1927 he made a trip to Europe, where it is in contact with Marc Chagall, whose work the brand, and other Surrealists.

    His work is marked by the influence of Giorgio de Chirico metaphysical and cubism of Pablo Picasso. His favorite themes are always linked to the human figure: portraits, self-portraits and nudes. He is not interested in national issues, indigenous and Afro-Brazilians.

    He died in 1934, thirty-three, in Rio de Janeiro, at a time when his fame beyond the circle of connoisseurs was still nascent. His work was forgotten by the public and critics until the 1960s, when his name was inscribe...
