    Predominantly a painter of Jewish people in their Sabbath finery, Kaufmann was born in Hungary, where he began painting at the age of fourteen. He studied at the National Academy of Art in Budapest, moving to Vienna, Austria in 1876 for further studies. He settled in Vienna.

    Isidor Kaufmann was a Hungarian portrait and genre painter. The trained bank clerk first attended the drawing school in Budapest and later studied at the Vienna Academy. On his travels to Hungary, Poland and Galicia he visited Hasidic 'Shtetl', districts with a high Jewish population, or so-called 'Shtiblach', small private synagogues, and as an artist he became a close observer of social and religious life there.
