    Ismail Shammout was born in 1930 in Lydda [today Lod] and became a Palestinian painter, draftsman, graphic artist, poster artist and art historian. He studied from 1950 at the Cairo Art Academy and in 1953 returned to Gaza. He studied from 1954 at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome and from 1956 was a resident in Beirut. He was a commissioner of the PLO for art and national culture from 1965, and then after the invasion of Israel in Lebanon 1982 fled. From 1984 Shammout was a resident in Kuwait.
