István Nádler is considered one of the most important contemporary artists in Hungary. Born in 1938, he has been present not only in Hungary for decades but also internationally. Despite his international reputation, his position in Hungary is controversial because of his critical attitude towards the current Hungarian government.

Nádler's oeuvre is based on both Hungarian constructivist avant-gardeism and neo-avant-gardism. His works are inspired by Arnulf Rainer, Georg Karl Pfahler and Lothar Quinte.
