    Ivan Makarov was the son of the painter Kuzma Alexandrovich Makarov, who studied at the Academy in Azarmas under the guidance of Alexander Stupin. He received his first artistic training with the father and with Stupin. Soon he helped the latter in the execution of church paintings. In 1842 he became a ‘free artist’ of the Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1845 he settled permanently in the city, and studied with the history painter Alexey Markov. After two years he specialized in portraiture and was supported by the Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna.
