J. D. Castro (1908-1994)

Jose D. Castro was born 1908 in Carmen, Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. He began sketching at the age of ten. In 1927 Castro moved to Baliwag, Bulacan and set up a small sign shop. About the same time he became a partner with sculptor Roman Carreon. Soon he met the well known Philippine artist Fabian de la Rosa who brought Castro to Manila for formal art studies. In 1933 he placed second for a still life painting at the United Philippine Annual. Upon completing his studies he worked with the Philippine Film and Stage show of Rogelio de la Rosa.
