About Jack Mendenhall

  • Biography

Photo-Realist painter Jack Mendenhall was born in 1937. He bases his work on meticulous depictions of magazine photographs to comment ironically on society. Some of his paintings make use of multiple mirror images which, while enhancing the abstract characteristics of his canvases, also seem to question the nature of reality and the world of contemporary societal values.

The artist studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, where he also taught. He received a purchase award from the Butler Institute of American Art, and has exhibited in the Tokyo Biennial as well as a traveling exhibition, Realism Since 1960. His work is in the collections of the University of California, Berkeley and the Oakland Museum.
