About Jahn Ekenaes

  • Biography

Ekenæs studied in Munich for two years from 1872 and stayed in the city until 1894. He was concerned with contemporary genre painters such as Frantz von Defreggers, with his popular renditions from German life.

Ekenæs came to pick up his motifs from his own well-known environment in Norway, and settled in Åsgårdstrand in 1894. "Ekenæs continued Adolph Tidemand and Sundt-Hansen's quiet and idyllic farming life stories." Wright page 558

"Ekenæs was a very skilled photographer and among his papers there are a lot of photographs of Norwegian farmers and fishermen that he used as a starting point for his paintings. His exact portrayals of the farmers' lives contain a wealth of cultural history information.” Heggtveit page 110
