About Jakob Gauermann

  • Biography

Together with Johann Kniep, Karl Ruß, Matthäus Loder and Thomas Ender Jakob Gauermann belonged to the court painters (Kammermaler) of Archduke Johann. With his reduced colour scheme and light watercolour palette Gauermann took away the threatening and massiveness from the mountains. Gauermann proceded narratively by adding staffage figures and architecture to his watercolours thus providing Alpine idylls and creating little stories. (Vgl. Gudrun Danzer, in: Exh. Cat. Albertina, Von der Schönheit der Natur, Die Kammermaler Erzherzog Johanns, Vienna 2015, p. 62). Jakob Gauermann lived from 1773 to 1843 in Germany.
