Painter-sculptor James Cady Ewell was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 28, 1889. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1917-1925. His paintings were recognizably figurative, but influenced by modernism and the Art Deco style. He also designed bookplates, some of which are in the William Augustus Brewer Bookplate Collection of the University of Delaware, Newark. His 1926 granite War Memorial, in Memorial Park, Highland Park, Illinois, is dedicated to soldiers of World War I, and to hopes for peace.

In a foray into the world of commercial design, Ewell was hired in the latter 1920s by Kenneth Parker of the Parker Pen Company, to design their $100 desk set, and later to work out the details for the new streamline models.

James Cady Ewell died on April 20, 1963, in Delray Beach, Florida.

James Marvin Cady Ewell biographical photo
Born May 28, 1889, James Cady Ewell knew when he was in high school that art was a career he wished to pursue. So he, as a high school junior, started attending night classes at The Art Institute of Chicago.

After graduation he became a full time student at the Institute. It was while a student there and on a sketching trip that he met Hazel Crow, who later became his wife.

Even though he was an amazing artist he had to go into advertising in order to support his family. One of his legacies can still be seen today on every piece of Wilson equipment, and that is the calligraphy Wilson.

His last 25 years were spent as a farmer of champion shorthorn cattle.
