    A painter of historical figure subjects, often in watercolor, James Dromgole Linton was born in London and was a student at the Leigh Art School. At an early age, he began illustration, working for a publication called The Graphic. However, his focus became increasingly painting as he gained more and more attention for his skills, particularly with watercolor. He was also an illustrator, and his work included The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare.

    He was elected an Associate in 1867, and then a Member in 1870 of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours* and also served as President of that organization, elected first from 1884 to 1898 and again in 1909 to 1916. In 1885, was he Knighted.
