He was also an illustrator, and his work included The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare. He was elected an Associate in 1867, and then a Member in 1870 of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours* and also served as President of that organization, elected first from 1884 to 1898 and again in 1909 to 1916.
