    James Pryde (b. 1866 / d. 1941)

    James Pryde was born on March 30, 1866 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His great uncles were the famous Scottish artists Robert Scott Lauder and James Eckford Lauder.

    Pryde studied in 1886 and 1887 at the Royal Scottish Academy. He then studied at Académie Julian, in Paris, under William-Adolph Bouguereau for three months. Pryde's early works during the years 1886 to 1890 included portraits in oil and charcoal, watercolor and pastels. Soon after his schooling in Pairs, he settled in London c. 1890.

    In 1899, Pryde married Marian Symons. Pryde along with his sister's husband, William Nicholson, formed the Beggarstaff Brothers partnership until 1900...
