He enrolled in the drawing class at Felix Meritis, school on one of the main canals in Amsterdam. Then he studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (1876-1877), the Academy in The Hague and the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
In 1883 he won the Willink Collen Price, a prize for young painters. He belonged to the late Hague School style of painting.
Wijsmuller was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. He formed together with Ernst Witkamp, Nicolaas van der Waay, Carel Dake and some others MAB Company (named after Michelangelo Buonarroti ).
