    Jan Nigro, born in 1920 in New Zealand, is best known for her figurative paintings, drawings and collages. Her name appears in scholarship and commentary of both Australian and New Zealand art. Nigro studied at Elam from 1936 – 1938, under the aegis of Archibald Fisher. Fisher’s teaching emphasized the study of the human figure, and though Nigro would later reject his stylistic conservatism, the human figure remained at the core of her work.
