He was the son of Dr. Jan Szancenbach, a gynecologist, prisoner of the camp in Starobielsk murdered in Kharkiv, and Maria Sklodowska-Szancenbach, artist painter, student of Olga Boznanska.
In 1940 he began studies at the School of Art Industry in Krakow (Kunstgewerbeschule). From 1943, when the school was closed by the German occupation authorities, until 1945 he was educated independently in a group of colleagues under the leadership of Tadeusz Brzozowski.
