About Jan Victors

  • Biography

Jan Victors was born in Amsterdam in 1619 and is believed to have studied in the workshop of Rembrandt van Rijn between circa 1637 and 1639. He was influenced by Rembrandt's circle, particularly Govaert Flinck, and also by Rembrandt's own master, Pieter Lastman. As an orthodox Calvinist, Victors did not paint depictions of Christ and the New Testament, instead preferring to produce scenes of the Old Testament. In 1673, he gave up painting and became a medical orderly and lay preacher on trading ships owned by the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
