Janusz Lewandowski is a graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He obtained his diploma in 1964 in the studio of Artur Nacht-Samborski.

In his work, Lewandowski eagerly referred to the Romantic era, close to his melancholic, spiritual style. Figures, apparitions and animals inspired by mythology and folklore often appear in his paintings.

Lewandowski obviously refers to the world of Young Poland painting, often referring to the legacy of Jacek Malczewski. The artist said about himself: "I was born in Masovia just before dusk.
