    Considered one of the most important Post Impressionists, Jean Chaleye was born to working class parents in Paris in the middle of the 19th Century. He began his career as a commercial engraver at the age of fourteen, which he continued until 1899 when he took a trip to England. He returned the following year to do his military service and on completion returned to the city of his birth.

    He participated to brilliant exhibitions : Paris (1946), New York (1947), ... and was very often rewarded. Among these exhibitions were:
    - Peintres Témoins de leur temps (Grand Prix 1947),
    - Prix du Gemmail en 1934 (consacré "Peintre de Lumière")
    - Prix international (Menton 1951)

    In 1953, the city of Marseille organized a jubilee exhibition to greet its fifty years long career.
