Jean Joseph Bidault
  • Biography

A student of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France, Jean Bidauld became a landscape painter of mountain and other rural scenes, sometime with figures. He moved to Paris in 1783, and was supported by Dulac, an art dealer and perfumer, who paid for Bidauld to study in Italy.

This experience, which cemented his neo-classic style, "was to have a fundamental impact on his artistic outlook, which remained nearly unchanged for the next sixty years." However, when this style went out of fashion, his painting was no longer sought after by collectors, and he died in poverty in 1846.
Between 1791 and 1844, Bidauld was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon, and in 1812, he won a Gold Medal.
