    Jean Paul Schmitz (1899-1970) was a German painter of Rhenish Expressionism and belonged to the group of the art dealer Johanna Ey in Düsseldorf. Schmitz studied there at the academy and was a pupil of Heinrich Nauen.

    In 1936 he was awarded by the Preussische Akademie (Rompreis) and received a scholarship which brought him to Rome for one year (Villa Massimo). In the 1930s several study trips brought him around Italy and Greece....
