    Jean-Pierre Schmid, better known by his stage name Lermite, was born in 1920 and began his artistic training in 1938 at the École d'Art in Biel, where he got to know German Expressionism and International Constructivism. As early as 1942 he exhibited at the Kunsthaus Zürich with the association of modern Swiss artists, the "Allianz". Jean-Pierre's acquaintance with the painter Coghuf, whose real name was Ernst Stocker, brought about a return to figurative painting during the war years. In 1946 Schmid settled in La Brévine in a small house called L'Ermitage, from which his stage name "Lermite" was derived.
