    Jean Simon Berthelemy was born in Laon in 1743. He was a student of Noel Hall, whose work strongly influenced his first paintings. The artist won the Prix de Rome in 1767 showing a style very close to the taste of Francois Boucher. Berthelemy stayed in Rome from 1771 to 1774 with the then director Charles-Joseph Natoire and befriended the painters Francois-Guillaume, Francois-Andre¸ Vincent and Joseph-Benoit Suvee.
