    Jean-Henry D'Arles, originally from Provence, added the name of his hometown to his surname. He was a student of Jean-Joseph Kapeller and became a marine painter in Marseille. Recommended by Kapeller, he worked as an assistant to Joseph Vernet and spent time in Rome. D'Arles settled in Marseille, where he produced various artworks, including scenes of daily life and ancient architectural elements. He was the first laureate of the Royal Academy of Sculpture and Painting of Marseille in 1752.
