About Jerry Farnsworth

  • Biography

    Active in Provincetown, Massachusetts from 1915, Jerry Farnsworth ran the Farnsworth School of Art, specializing in figure and portrait painting. He had been a student of Charles Hawthorne at Provincetown, and also studied at the Corcoran Art School. In 1935, he was elected to the National Academy of Design.

    Married to artist Helen Sawyer, he operated art schools at Cape Cod and Sarasota, Florida, where he "became the father figure of the Sarasota Art Colony." (Dappert) Also he was Carnegie Visiting Professor of Art and Artist in Residence, and was a teacher at the Art Students League in New York.
