    Considered to be the first Moroccan painter to use the non-representational style, Jilali Gharbaoui was orphaned at the age of ten and was placed in an orphanage. He attended highschool in Fez, the third largest city in Morocco and then the Academy of the Arts in that city. In 1952, awarded a scholarship, he enrolled in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later attended the Academy Julian. Taking an interest in impressionism he became increasingly influenced by abstraction. Also in France, he began having severe mental health

    Returning to Morocco in 1955, he moved to Rabat and shortly after attempted suicide and was placed in a psychiatric hospital and from that time had problems with that type of illness. ...
