    Johann Martin von Rohden, 1778 Kassel - 1868 Rome, German landscape painter. Studied painting in Kassel until 1795. Then moved to Rome. Returned to Germany for a short period during the Second Coalition War. 1802 Annual prize from the art magazine Propyläen. Back in Rome from 1802-11, and joined the circle of German Romans around the neoclassicists Joseph Anton Koch and Johann Christian Reinhart. 1805 Trip to Sicily. 1827 Appointed back to Kassel as court painter. 1829 Leave of absence and return to Rome, where he produced further paintings for the Elector. From 1831, he received a fixed annual salary, even after his release from electoral service in 1832.
