About Johann Nepomuk Geller

  • Biography

Johann Nepomuk Geller was born in Vienna. In 1876 he started studying painting at the Vienna Academy under Christian Griepenkerl. But financial distress forced him to work as a chromolithographer. He continued to paint mainly in Wachau in Lower Austria, where he created many of his popular market scenes.

Later Geller continued his studies at the academy and attended a school for landscape painting under Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels. He was a co-founder of the Hagenbund in 1900, one of the largest and most progressive groups of artists at the time. Geller was well traveled, having visited France, Italy and Eastern Europe and was awarded many prizes.
