About Johannes Ernst Spangenberg

  • Biography

Johannes Ernst Spangenberg, an Easton, Pennsylvania Bible artist, created birth and baptismal certificates, called frakturs. The Andres family of Sussex County, West New Jersey were some of his most active patrons, and for them and others he created art-rich documents in watercolor and ink, usually worded in English. Much like the page of a medieval manuscript, they featured musicians, floral groups, animals, and human figures. Often there was a floral border.

His fraktur of one of the Andres's sons, in the collection of Ralph Esmerian, has been exhibited at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City, and is illustrated and discussed by Pastor Frederick Weiser in "American Radiance," the book that accompanied the exhibition.
