    Johannes Josephus Destrée was born in 1827 in Laeken, Brussels, and became a Belgian landscape painter whose career unfolded between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Destrée trained under Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove and Andreas Schelfhout, two leading figures of the Dutch Romantic landscape tradition, whose influence is visible in his compositional structure and atmospheric handling of light. He later became associated with the Pulchri Studio in The Hague, an important artistic center for 19th-century painters.
