    John Dawson Watson became a student at the Manchester School of Art at the age of fifteen, subsequently studying at the Royal Academy.

    In 1856, he was noticed by Ford Madox Brown, who invited him to exhibit at his house in London. Watson was elected as an associate of the Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1864, and a member in 1869. He won several medals for his work.

    He designed theatre costumes, illustrated a number of books, and designed the furniture and decorations for the house of his brother-in-law, Birket Foster. Between 1859 and 1892, he contributed 372 works to London exhibitions.
