About John Doemling

  • Biography

Born in Würzburg, Bavaria in 1894. Doemling spent his early years in a seminary in preparation to become a priest; however, by age 12 he had opted to pursue an art career. He studied art in Wuerzburg and, while in his teens, left home and supported himself by restoring paintings in churches and monasteries in Italy, Switzerland, and France. In 1911 he immigrated to Chicago where he found work as a letterer for the Pullman Car Company while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. During the 1920s he made many trips to art colonies throughout the U.S. including Los Angeles and Laguna Beach. In 1927 he had plans to take up permanent residence in Laguna Beach where he was active with the local art association.
