John Elwyn - Artist Info

About John Elwyn

  • Biography from Brightwells

Elwyn studied at the Carmarthen School of Art (1933-1937) and also at the Royal College of Art, London. Later he taught at Portsmouth and Winchester Schools of Art.

The artist is perhaps most closely identified with the landscape of West Wales and Cardiganshire which he regularly painted.

Much of Elwyn's work encapsulates the Welsh countryside 'as a mixture of vivid green, yellow and orange sunlit buildings, shimmering white washed barns and winding country lanes' (Meyrick).

Titles such as Off the main Road, Cattle between Barns, Entrance to a Farm, Farm Entrance, or Upland Farm were recurring motifs in Elwyn's work of the 1970's.
