    John Hubbard was born in Ridgefield, Cconnecticut on February 26, 1931. He studied at Harvard University, Art Students League (with Morris Kantor) from 1956 to 1958, and with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1957. He served in the United States Military Counter-Intelligence in Japan from 1954 to 1956.

    Hubbard then lived in Rome from 1958 to 1960; he moved to England in 1960. He married Caryl Whineray in 1961 and they had two children, Kate and Edmund. He was painting instructor at Camberwell School of Art in London from 1963 to 1965. He designed sets and costumes for the Dutch National Ballet Company. He travelled to Morocco on 1969 and 1971.
