John Middleton was born in 1828 in Norwich, and as a boy learned from John Berney Ladbrooke and Joseph Stannard. By the age of 20, the Norfolk Chronicle already referred to him as 'one of the most rising young artists of the day' (11 December 1847). John Middleton moved to London in 1847 and exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution. He returned to live in Norwich in 1849, and tragically died from consumption at the age of just 29.
