    John Mitchell (1942-2014)

    Born and brought up in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, John Mitchell attended Kingston School of Art, and after a postgraduate year at Kingston he taught from 1964 until 1971 at Coventry School of Art, where he developed his conceptual side.

    His first solo exhibition, followed at Camden Arts Centre in 1972, and major solo exhibitions followed quickly beginning 1973 at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. In 1974 the first of many exhibitions was held at at Galerie Swart, Amsterdam.

    As principal lecturer in charge of painting, 1971-78, at Stourbridge School of Art, West Midlands, John was an inspirational and demanding tutor.
