    Steeple lived in Birmingham and found his subjects in Wales, the Midlands and Sussex. His work is usually in the tradition of David Cox Snr., and can sometimes show affinities with the Glasgow School.

    John Steeple (1823-1887) exhibited at the Royal Academy (of Arts) between 1852-79, the Society of British Artists (SS), the New Society of Painters in Watercolours (NWS) and elsewhere.

    He painted landscapes and coastal scenes and lived in Birmingham and London. Pictures he exhibited at the Royal Academy include The Ford: A Scene on the Dee(1852), Mountain and Moorland, N. Wales (1874), and Curfew (1879).
