    Jose Julio de Souza-Pinto was a Portuguese artist who was strongly influenced by the French Barbizon School. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1881 to 1912.

    He was known for his naturalistic style, which was inspired by Jules Breton, Jules Bastien-Lepage, and Jean-Francois Millet. Souza-Pinto was a member of the Academia de Belas Artes of Lisbon and regularly exhibited his work with the Grupo de Leao.

    His delicate approach to naturalism was based on his strong draughtsmanship and a good sense for color. The present painting, entitled The bather, reveals both these painterly qualities....
