Painter and writer, Josep Berga i Boix had to go into exile in France because of the Third Carlist War. He returned in 1868, called by his friend Joaquín Vayreda to direct the Artistic Centre, a private painting academy set up around the painters of the Olot school. Under his tutelage the sculptors Josep Clarà and Miquel Blay, among others, were trained. But what he excelled most in was painting, with a marked realism, through which he was able to bring the great Olot landscape to the canvas with a very personal style.
