About Josef Schuster

  • Biography

Josef Schuster moved to Vienna as a young child, where his talent as a painter was discovered by chance by Joseph Mössmer (1780-1845), a professor at the Academy. At the Viennese Academy, young Schuster trained under Joseph Mössmer, Sebastian Wegmayr (1776-1857) and Franz Xaver Petter (1791-1866), in particular.

Schuster spent a period of time at the health resort of Bad Gastein, and subsequently, at the encouragement of Archduke Johann, he adopted the colors and shapes of alpine flora as his own artistic subject (the owners of his works include the Österreichische Galerie in Vienna).
