    As the son of a carpenter, Josef Willroider was trained in his father's workshop before he received his first painting lessons with Ludwig Canziani (1821-1891) in Villach. At the age of 22, he moved to Munich and studied at the Academy of Art. The German painter Eduard Schleich the Elder (1812-1874) and his brothers Andreas (1815-1910) and Oswald Achenbach (1827-1905) probably had ??the biggest impact on the work of Willroider.

    In 1870 Willroider joined the "Malkasten", a progressive association of landscape painters who turned away from academic conventions towards the French style open-air painting. In 1882 Josef Willroider was made an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munic...
