    Josep Cañas was a self-taught draughtsman and sculptor from Spain who attended courses at the School of Arts and Crafts in Villanueva y la Geltrú. He settled in Barcelona in 1925 and joined the Círculo de Sant Lluc and the Real Círculo Artístico. He devoted himself to landscape painting and theatre during these years and held his first individual exhibition in 1932.

    He won the prize for sculpture at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1942 and held exhibitions in Madrid, Mexico, and New York. He continued to exhibit his work in prestigious galleries and carried out important commissions.
