    Most well-known as a painter of snowscapes, Farquharson was a Scottish laird by inheritance. He studied at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh, with landscape painter Peter Graham being his strongest influence in the 1860s. From 1880 on, he spent several winters at the studio of Carolus-Duran in Paris, France. Back in Scotland, he adapted the French plein-air techniques to his work.
