    A painter, photographer, and writer, Joseph Crilley specialized in painting marine and street scenes of New Hope, Pennsylvania where he lived from 1948 to 1980. Before specializing in these subjects, he was a trompe l'oeil still-life painter and worked as a commercial photographer.

    Crilley's photographs have been published in national magazines including Time-Life publications. From 1955 to 1961, he headed the art department in New Hope at the Solebury High School.

    He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and studied in Philadelphia at the College of Art and the Fleisher Memorial Graphic Sketch Club. He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and Audubon Artists and exhibited widely in Pennsylvania.
