He also worked as an art columnist for the Irish News and spoke at several international events on the visual arts in Northern Ireland. McWilliams held numerous exhibitions, showing work regularly with the Royal Ulster Academy, of which he was made a member and served as its president (2000-2004). Joseph McWilliams (1938-2015) was an Irish artist known for his satirical depictions of Orangemen and images of the Troubles. He studied both at the Belfast College of Art and the Open University.
