    Joseph (Rebel) Rebell was born in 1787.

    Rebell studied at Vienna’s Academy from 1799 to 1809. After his initial interest in architectural design, he soon turned to landscape painting.

    Upon completion of his studies, he undertook his first journeys to Switzerland (1809/10) and Milan (1810-1812). They were followed by a two-year stay (1813-1815) in Naples.

    There, Rebel was in contact with Caroline Bonaparte, Napoleon’s youngest sister. Her husband, General Joachim Murat, had been appointed King of Naples by his brother-in-law in 1808.
