  • Biography

Born in Mexico City in 1675, Juan Rodríguez Juárez was the son of the painter Antonio Rodríguez (active ca. 1655-80) and the brother of Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez. A contemporary of Juan Correa and José Villalpando, he is considered to be the last great painter of the colonial era.

Although greatly influenced by Murillo, he was able to convey a very strong sense of individuality throughout his oeuvre. Some of his paintings are found in the collections of the Museo de Guadalajara in Mexico and the Cathedral of Mexico City.
